What American accent do you have?
Your Result: The Inland North

You may think you speak "Standard English straight out of the dictionary" but when you step away from the Great Lakes you get asked annoying questions like "Are you from Wisconsin?" or "Are you from Chicago?" Chances are you call carbonated drinks "pop."

Japanese fact of the day [Jan. 2nd, 2007|03:25 am]
[Current Mood | irritated]

Japanese fact of the day:
The Japanese kanji for "man" (男 = otoko) is a combination of the kanjis for "rice paddy" (田 = ta) and "force" (力 = chikara).

Japanese is a very fascinating, beautiful and interesting language, learning it is definitely challenging (which makes it interesting and worthwhile) and I've been planning to learn it for quite some time. Now I finally decided to actually start learning it. I already figured out some of the basics and learned a few hiragana. 'gotta get a few books after christmas and learn a few more hiragana and katakana until then.
Ganbatte, me!

The inevitable return of the great black dude [Sep. 14th, 2005|10:40 am]

The hacker is back. My server is being attacked since 28 hours straight, now.
We just requested the attack log from our ISP and are going to bring a charge against the hacker.

Hackers [Sep. 3rd, 2005|12:28 pm]
[Current Mood | angry]

WTF!?
The attack on my webserver is a professional one! And the longest one ever experienced by my Internet Service Provider (ISP). Which is totally nuts because it's one of the biggest ISPs in Europe!
It's a DDoS SYN-Flood attack (Distributed Denial of Service - SYN-Flood) and works like this:
DDoS: Several Computers Worldwide get hacked by a hacker who then infects them with a program that does nothing else but attacking our server without the owner of the infected hacking computer noticing. We're talking about insane numbers of hacked computers worldwide here. Those computers start a
SYN-Flood attack on our server: To establish an internet connection between 2 PCs (client and webserver [http], client and mailserver, 2 computers communicating with messengers, 2 computers communicating with filesharing tools, .......) using the TCP protocol (very common. for simple messages without any sort of connection and delivery control the alternative is UDP) those PCs need to run through a handshake procedure.
The 3-way-handshake-protocol of TCP: The computer that wants to connect sends a SYN (synchronize) message containing a random number to the other computer. That other computer now responds with a SYN/ACK (synchronize/acknowledged) message containing an own random number for the SYN and the number it received + 1 for the ACK. Now the 1st computer has to respond with an ACK containing the sent random number + 1. Or an RST (reset connection) or FIN (terminate connection). Since the connection only becomes established, confirmed and controllable after that last step there is no way to know whether the 1st computer received the SYN/ACK. So as long as the server doesn't receive an ACK, RST or FIN it has to assume the SYN/ACK timed out and send it over and over again. Resulting in a huge memory leak due to many server processes for all the connections, heavy CPU load because of all the connections and huge amounts of datatraffic. Which basically results in the server not being able to offer its services and generating lots of expensive datatraffic. Just imagine running 60.000ish programs on your computer. Same effect.
The program the hacker has distributed on his hacked computers only sends the first SYN but then doesn't do anything else, which requires quite some programming skills because usually the handshaking is done by the operating system.

Sooo now you all know what's happening. A professional hacker has been running a worldwide DDoS SYN-Flood attack targeted on our server for the longest timespan our huge european ISP has ever experienced.

SYN-Flood - or - How do you get me to sue you in 2 hours. [Sep. 2nd, 2005|09:43 pm]
[Current Mood | angry]

Sooo... Someone seems to have some fun killing my Server by SYN-Flooding it.
Just in case the attacker is reading this.... The attacks are being logged while the server is down.
We're gonna get you... And the longer the server and the hosted commercial sites are down the more fun you're gonna get with us.

Lol - Anything alright? ^^ [Mar. 14th, 2005|07:55 pm]
Hmmm... I wonder whether I have to know that for the multimedia test tomorrow:

MPEG-1 Audio is defined by ISO/IEC 11172-3:1993 Part 3 (ISO IEC JTC1 SC29 WG11)

Lol?

For all those who went all o.O over that: ISO = International Standards Organization, IEC = International Electotechnical Commission, JTC1 = Joint Technical Committee 1, SC29 = Sub-Committee 29, WG11 = Work Group 11 (moving pictures with audio), ISO/IEC 11172-3:1993 = Coding of moving pictures and associated audio for digital storage media at up to about 1.5 Mbps, Part 3 = Audio.

But seriously.... wtf!? o.O

[Current Music |Green Day - Boulevard of broken dreams (@TV)]

Finally - Another point removed from my agenda. :)
If you like playing around with image spectrums you may want to play with the
DCT Tool (Input value range: -128..127) I had to program. It's a part of the JPEG compression/decompression procedure and responsible for the transformation of a block of picture data to its 2-dimensional color-spectrum.
The complete sourcecode is available here.

The biggest christmas tree of the world [Dec. 6th, 2004|08:54 pm]
[Current Mood | surprised]
[Current Music |Lucy Diakovska - The wish (on TV) (sp?)]

Oh. I always thought the biggest christmas tree of the world would be the one in front of the Rockefeller Center in NY. As I found out today it's only half as tall as the real biggest christmas tree of the world... which is in Dortmund and thus only a 10 minute walk away from here. 8-O This one is 46 m = 150.9 ft high. (The NY christmas tree 2002 was 76 ft high.) ehh... wow.
